TWITTER TIP – HAVE A WEIRD NAME? HOW TO CAPTURE THAT TRAFFIC
Do you have a weird name, or one that is commonly misspelled? Here is an important tip to make sure everyone who is looking for you – finds you.
There isn’t a week that goes by where someone does not forget the “e” in my last name. My last name is “Malarkey” not “Malarky”. I used to search my name that way to see if people were misspelling my name, and sure enough they were. I can only imagine if my name were more complicated.
So I registered that handle and now I capture all of that traffic. I tweeted one tweet from the misspelled account to re-direct the traffic. See the photo below.

Who’s watching you on Twitter?

There are many obstacles in the way of recent graduates these days. Some of these include a horrific economy, rising prices (in anything really), and now Twitter confusion. Now what do I mean when I say Twitter confusion? Well a young professional like myself is confused everyday on how to use the social media platform. Not on how to @reply or DM someone but how to balance the life of a young wild life and the business side of the social media platform. Many different aspects contribute to this confusion and they include:
College buddy response:
It is always difficult to log onto Twitter after a long day at work and see all of your college buddies recent escapades. Why is it hard? Not being able to respond to that absurdly funny yet inappropriate TwitPic or the latest gossip on “that hot chic” is harder then you think. Knowing your business followers will likely see it scares me enough not to continue with my actions.
Twitter Narcissism:
A recent survey I saw on Mashable stated that 80 percent of Twitter users are narcissist by nature. I wont lie and say that I am never like that, actually I would like to tweet more about what IM doing rather then social media tips, new technology, or the new world of media. However, the thought of a client seeing what I had for breakfast or what my ankle looks like after a sprain doesn’t seem like the best idea.
The main lesson I have learned from growing my Twitter army (all 200 of them) is don’t tweet anything your boss wouldn’t like. Similar when saying “Don’t say anything your mom wouldn’t approve of”. In closing, Twitter can be a very strong tool, but for young professionals there will always be a fine line of keeping your personnel life away from all business to see.
Rid your DM inbox of spam, auto Dm’s & Mafia Invites on Twitter
Normally I receive around 200 DM’s every day. The majority of them are auto dm’s, spam, unsolicited invites to join a mafia family, slap a trout on someone, or play a game, take a quiz. Exactly the kinds of productive activities I normally engage in with my free time – NOT. I don’t have time for games or quiz’s and I choose to use my free time doing different things. I don’t have anything against these games and I actually think they are great if they help people get more out of Twitter, but plain and simple – I wanted my Direct Message box back, as I began missing valuable DM’s.
I began to click the links and search for opt-out links or instructions and put together a short list of the biggest offenders.

A few months ago, I made the leap from Facebook to Twitter, much to my husband’s dismay. He already had (somewhat legitimate) concerns regarding the amount of time I spent on Facebook catching up with lost friends from high school. Now I was adding the world of celebrities (in what my son referred to as legalized stalking) on Twitter? Yep, I sure was. Keith Urban is on Twitter, you know! So without knowing what a tweet was, I had an account of my very own.
