stuff ill be talking about Lets talk about it.

  1. Breaking into the top 1000 -

Wow what an accomplishment. If you had told me 2 weeks ago id be here- I wouldn’t have believed you. Since i posted this morning I have actually broken into the elite ranks of the top 800. Today was MASSIVE! I’m beginning to realize the bigger you get the easier it is to get people to follow you.

Don’t be discouraged if your just starting out – you CAN build a following quick. It does get easier the bigger you get though – I think its referred to as the school of fish theory. “If 8k people are following this guy, I should too”. For whatever reason – it does get easier to grow as you get bigger.

2. How to break the 2000 following barrier???

I get this question daily. – “Sean How do I get passed the 2,000 following barrier?”  That’s a great question. When I was getting started I spent hours trying to figure this out, and then one day I noticed a trend. you have to get your followers up to a certain level.

When starting out – twitter caps the amount of people you can follow to 2,ooo people. My guess is to prevent spammers, but none the less – twitter will put the breaks on you there. Not until you have 1900 followers will they allow you to follow more. If  you wanna accelerate this process and move beyond this barrier see my day6 post where I talk about dumping some dead weight.

3.ummm im not sure – ill figure out something good.  (oh yeah possibly Ill tell you about some of the crazy things that are happening as a result of all this.)

Ok, some strange things are brewing. In the last week – I have been asked to go on the news and talk about twitter – I declined because it seemed like an odd story the reporter wanted to cover and honestly I didn’t want to be on the news! I hate the news, it always seems so negative – in fact they were trying to tie me into some story about how a business is using twitter to throw parties for people who have been recently laid off. – Not for me.

On a good front I have had 2 offers that are worthy of considering. The first was for someone to write an e book for me and use this platform and my new celebrity status on twitter to sell it. It sounds OK – but I need to consider it more. The second was from someone who is writing an e book on twitter success stories. I inquired for more info after her initial request, and was blown away with the caliber of people that are going to be included in this book. I accepted, even though there is no monetary gain to be had – I am just flattered to be Included.

If you’ve read thus far in my experiment – you should have developed a following by now. With that said my tool I want to share with you today has to do with DM’s. Currently I get around 300 DM’s a day. Auto responders and clever folks have me convinced that they are all auto-responses.  So I rarely look at them – Send me an @reply if you want me to see it. But go and read this blog right now to learn how to drastically cut back on the # of auto-responses.  Big shout out to @sharonhayes for being so brilliant and figuring this out, and then for sharing it – that’s what I love about twitter.

  • Sean,

I'm loving your stuff here bro. You speak about "dropping dead weight." I have a question about that. Once I've followed a number of people you suggest checking back a few days later and unfollow anyone who is not following me. I want to know if there is an easy way to know who is not following you? Twitter only recommends that you look through your emails or click "followers" and scroll through. Thats realllly time consuming. On twitter you mentioned there is a secret to this. Could you please contact me. I'm really dying to know. Keep up the great work. You've got great insights and I've learned a lot from you already.

  • Jay,

sorry somehow I missed your comment. To figure out who to follow - decide what you want. Whatever your interested in - search for people that are experts in that field. Follow them, and MORE importantly - follow all there followers. Those are people who share the same interests as you. Thats your audience, your market.

  • Sharon,
Sky-dive - now theres a visual. Yes sometimes I feel the same.

Social networking can be very consuming. I try to use some of the automated tools that twitter offers. That and literaly scheduling my time - so it doesnt absorb me. Sometimes though I really enjoy it and I do let it absorb me.

Social networking in many ways is as commonplace as the telephone and tv. My wife actually uses FB to send me emails now. I definantly have replaced tv time with SN time. I enjoy it much more and find it to be more productive.

The best advice I could give you - is to start with an end in mind. And plan accordingly. Use SN to your advantage, whatever angle you take - just make sure you have a plan.

  • Did you ever feel you are in the middle of a sky-dive? I do, after jumping into the blue-sky-world of Web 2.0.(Let's hope the parachute works!) Two questions: 1) How do you keep from being totally absorbed by social networking (SN) sites (Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and 2) When will SN become as commonplace as the telephone/TV/etc.? Thanks for a great blog.

Hey Sean, I run a local pet adoption center and we are looking to grow our list quick and use twitter to send out alerts for animals to be adopted. We stumbled around for awhile trying to figure twitter out and then I came across your blog. In 3 short days we have grown our local audience (thanks to your suggestion on how to find locals) by over 700 people. I really appreciate you sharing this stuff. It will make a big difference in many animals lives. Thanks again.

Thanks a lot. So again: "No strain, take it easy." Yes. that’s the philosphy of the future. As son we are trying to force things get worse.
Thanks. I think I understand now much better this phenomena.

    Hey jfuebel,

Good question. I love following a lot people. Its entertainment sitting in front ow twitter.com/home and hitting the refresh button. I can just sit back and watch and there is a constant stream of entertainment. Sometimes I feel like being interactive and I will join in. Other times I just sit back and watch. I may spend 30 minutes a day watching the stream.

Just wait until you grow big enough - every time I ask a question I always look forward to the dozens of responses. see the headache post or the hiccups one n this blog.

    Hope you enjoy,
    Sean

Hi. New at twitter. Still wondering: If everybody ist following thousands and is follewed by thousands – how you can handle the enormeous ammount of twitts on your twitter home page? How many hours and days you have to invest only to follow these streams? I do not catch the whole thing, not yet. Can you help me by answering these questions? Thanks
