Who’s watching you on Twitter?

There are many obstacles in the way of recent graduates these days. Some of these include a horrific economy, rising prices (in anything really), and now Twitter confusion. Now what do I mean when I say Twitter confusion? Well a young professional like myself is confused everyday on how to use the social media platform. Not on how to @reply or DM someone but how to balance the life of a young wild life and the business side of the social media platform. Many different aspects contribute to this confusion and they include:

College buddy response:

It is always difficult to log onto Twitter after a long day at work and see all of your college buddies recent escapades. Why is it hard? Not being able to respond to that absurdly funny yet inappropriate TwitPic or the latest gossip on “that hot chic” is harder then you think. Knowing your business followers will likely see it scares me enough not to continue with my actions.

Twitter Narcissism:

A recent survey I saw on Mashable stated that 80 percent of Twitter users are narcissist by nature. I wont lie and say that I am never like that, actually I would like to tweet more about what IM doing rather then social media tips, new technology, or the new world of media. However, the thought of a client seeing what I had for breakfast or what my ankle looks like after a sprain doesn’t seem like the best idea.

The main lesson I have learned from growing my Twitter army (all 200 of them) is don’t tweet anything your boss wouldn’t like. Similar when saying “Don’t say anything your mom wouldn’t approve of”. In closing, Twitter can be a very strong tool, but for young professionals there will always be a fine line of keeping your personnel life away from all business to see.

What, you want to interview me @SeanMalarkey?

Recently with the release of Twixplode I have been getting a lot of requests for interviews.

Two recent ones that standout to me are one I did with Sharifah Hardie & Ryan Yee.

Sharifah Hardie is Google’s #1 Ranked “Professional Business Consultant,” she hosts a very successful Blog Talk Radio Show “Ask Sharifah”. So when she contacted me through Facebook and wanted to interview me – I was floored! We ended up doing an awesome interview where I discuss – my background, how I found Twitter, how I make money with Twitter, and a lot of ninja tactics and principles from Twixplode -  Tons of good free advice for optimizing your Twitter Experience.

beach_biggerMay 14th | by Sean Malarkey
****This was an email I just sent to my V.I.P. list. If you’re not on it – go here and get on it now, I provide good information for those on my list!

For those of you who are using HUMMINGBIRD – Or manually adding a lot of followers on a daily basis -this tip has increased my follow back rate to almost 70%.

What I used to do - I would go to profiles of people in my niche and click on their follower’s link and click the button for hummingbird to follow all – and it would run for an hour or so, clicking away till I reached my limit.

To Tweet or Not to Tweet – 5 effective ways to use Twitter

mike_frizzi1

May 8th | by Mike Frizzi (The Curmudgeonly Ad guy )

A lot of people who join Twitter follow this 3 step pattern:

1) Begin following people and hope that somehow people will begin following them

2) Realize that Twitter is not the equivalent to the holy grail or an uncashed lottery ticket

3)  Not only cease using the service, but become vocal detractors of it

The problem is that many people simply don’t get Twitter or understand the elegant simplicity of it. Twitter, more than most social media outlets, really does give back what you put in. With that in mind, I have put together this guide:

5 ways to use Twitter - What to talk about, how to talk about it, and who to talk about it with.

1) Use Twitter to try to make yourself some money - There are several services available that, with minimal investment, will generate you tens of thousand of followers. These followers then receive every message you send down the TwitStream. If you send out some links to say, your blog, and your blog has ad content on it…that’s money generated for you. In my case, my blog does not have any ads. Still, my whole blog is an advertisement, it advertises me – my thoughts, in my words on my site. Many things may come of this traffic, including: guest columns on sites like this one, more eyes on your words,  paying gigs writing for publications, even full- time job offers.

Still, we have only scratched the surface.

Twitter Marketing Tip: Show Some Love

landon_fears

May 8th | by Landon Fears

It may seem counter intuitive that a powerful marketing technique on Twitter is to promote other Twitter users, but it’s not.  Most of the top Twitterers (who weren’t famous before Twitter) are masters at doing this.

By nature, Twitter is a huge community conversation, and all of the interactions are for the public to see.  When you show love to others, the public sees it, and will be more inclined to show love to their followers, including you.  Here are some great ways you can show your own brand of love to your “tweeps”:

  • Retweet (RT) great content – If you see a great Twitter update, then please spread it by Retweeting it. Always be on the lookout for great tweets from your followers. I like to scan my update stream a couple times an hour and pick out any tweets that catch my eye.  Also keep an eye out for tweets with “Please RT”, as it is usually of great importance to the user, who will likely appreciate your support greatly.
  • Cite Twitter users with web content – When I see a great blog post or web site that I want to post on Twitter, many times I’ll check to see if the author is on Twitter. Most websites will have a link to their Twitter page in the header or sidebar.  Go ahead and follow them, and if you have room in the 140-character tweet, try to cite them along with the link. After the link I include something like, “(by @username)”, where the username is the Twitter user.  Try and get in the habit of looking for Twitter users on sites and articles you like.  It takes a bit of time and effort, but it creates closer connections when the people you follow aren’t complete strangers.
